24V vs 48V Voltage Drop Bench Test

In progress: measured voltage across 5–30 m of track at 25/50/75/100% load. The claim "48V has less drop than 24V" deserves a number, so we are running the test and will publish the raw data.

Why We Are Running This Test

The formula Vdrop = 2·I·ρ·L/A says a 24V system loses twice the voltage of a 48V system at the same power and cable — so 24V systems hit the 5% rule-of-thumb limit at about half the run length. Buyers then have to choose: cheaper 24V system with a shorter run, or a 48V system that covers a longer track. That choice deserves measured evidence, not a formula. We are running it on our own bench and will publish the numbers — including the measured voltages, which vendors typically leave as a marketing claim.

Methodology

  • System under test: 24V and 48V magnetic track systems with the same copper rail cross-section used in our standard stock track ( see the magnetic track system).
  • Instruments: calibrated bench multimeter (V, 0.1% + 1 dgt) and an electronic DC load; thermocouple on the rail at the far end.
  • Load profile: 25 / 50 / 75 / 100% of the rated system power, resistive-equivalent load spaced evenly along the track (real fixture population approximation).
  • Measurement points: supply terminal and track far end at 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 m; delivered voltage and drop (%) recorded after 15 min stabilization at rated current, ambient ~25°C.

Results Summary (50% load)

Data collected; the full table (all four load levels × six track lengths, 24V and 48V) publishes here. The page is currently not indexed by search engines — once the data is live it will be added to our sitemap and llms.txt.

What the Data Will Confirm (or Correct)

The V = 2·I·ρ·L/A estimate in our 24V vs 48V guide predicts:

  • 24V @ 100 W: 5% drop at ≈12 m of track — the practical run limit.
  • 48V @ 100 W: ≈3% drop at 30 m — comfortably under the 5% rule of thumb.
  • The fix direction differs too: at 24V the standard capex remedy is a shorter run or thicker copper; at 48V you can keep the run and add fixtures.
